About me, my expertise, qualifications and SEND experience

I am a passionate and highly qualified science teacher specialising in special educational needs.  I have over 14 years of experience working across key stage 2 to key stage 4 in special educational settings, mainstream and independent schools alongside private tuition. I have training and experience teaching children with many varied abilities and disabilities These include, but are not exclusive to: autism, ADHD, ADD, PDA and SEMH; dyslexia and dyscalculia and general learning difficulties .

How I teach students

I believe that every young person can become an independent, engaged learner and reach their full potential when a trusting and meaningful relationship has been developed, and the appropriate skilled support is given to them.

I prioritise the building of trust and meaningful relationship with my students by giving them time and space to show me their abilities, interests and learning styles. I then plan lessons and activities which are tailored to each student. I feel confident in my ability to teach students with SEN and SEND because of my extensive specialist training and experience teaching students with many different abilities and challenges.

I use applied strategies to support my practice, noticeably reducing anxiety and increasing productivity and learning. With a wealth of child-centered expertise and experience of teaching pupils with a wide range of difficulties, I am committed to ensuring sessions engage and interest the young person whilst developing a love of learning, fostering independence and building confidence for my learners. I maintain a warm and positive connection with my learners to build strong and positive relationships.

How I teach Maths

I teach maths by creating a personalised learning experiences that build confidence and understanding.  I use visual resources, practical activities, technology and real-life examples to make mathematics concepts accessible and meaningful.  Learning is broken into manageable steps giving time to celebrate successes.  I help students to develop problem solving skills and resilience.  My approach focuses on making maths interactive and relevant.  All learners feel supported and motivated to achieve their full potential.

How I teach English

I teach English by creating an inclusive, engaging and supportive learning space.  I adapt lessons to suit the needs of my learners using visual aids, structured scaffolding and differentiated activities to ensure that all my students can access and enjoy the learning.   I use discussion and creative opportunities to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening whilst building their confidence and independence.

How I help students communicate

I help students communicate by creating a safe, encouraging space where they feel listened to and understood. Using patience, clear language, and positive reinforcement, I build their confidence to express ideas in ways that suit them best. Whether through discussion, writing, or creative activities, I support each learner in finding their voice and developing the skills to share it with others

How I help students engage with learning

I help students engage with learning by making lessons interactive, encouraging curiosity, and linking topics to their interests. With patience, creativity, and positive energy, I adapt activities to each learner so they feel motivated, confident, and excited to make progress.

How I make lessons fun

I make my lessons fun, engaging and tailored to each learners individual needs and interests.  By using a variety of interactive activities, games and visual resources keeping students motivated.  I help students to feel comfortable taking part in lessons and make learning enjoyable.

How I help students with focus, attention and emotional regulation

To help with focus and attention, I start by creating a predictable and organised learning space. This reduces distractions and helps students feel secure.  Incorporating short, timed activities and movement breaks also helps to reset their attention.

I make an effort to connect with each student individually, showing genuine interest in their lives and validating their feelings. This helps them feel safe and understood, which is crucial for emotional and academic growth.
