In this week’s episode, we spoke to Rebekah who originally trained as a Mental Health Nurse but is now a fully qualified teacher. She has also just completed her master’s and is considering going on to do a Ph.D. in special needs.
Ahead of the podcast, we sent her these three questions:
1. How does your experience of training nurses help you with SEND children?
2. In a typical lesson online or face-to-face how do you keep up engagement?
3. You are a member of a local theatre group what skills do you think as a teacher carry over?
Rebekah told us about the training mental health nurses have to go through in order to complete their training and how this helps them when they are providing care to children with special needs.
Finding about the child’s interests and liaising with the child’s parents or carers about the interests of the child enables the teacher to know what signs to look out for and how to mitigate potential issues.
We talked about holding children’s attention and keeping them engaged and on task throughout the lesson, no easy task when Plans a, b, c, and d haven’t worked.
