How I teach children with SEND
About me, my expertise, qualifications and SEND experience
I am a highly experienced tutor and qualified teacher with over 20 years in education. I specialise in Science, but I also have 10 years experience of teaching English, and Maths up to GCSE. As a Senior Examiner, I bring in-depth knowledge of assessment and curriculum standards. I have extensive experience supporting students with SEND, including autism, ADHD, EBSD, and SEMH, and hold counselling skills qualifications to help build strong, positive relationships. My approach is calm, adaptable, and focused on unlocking every learner’s potential.
How I Teach Students with SEND
I teach students using a calm, structured approach that balances consistency with flexibility. Lessons are broken into manageable steps, with clear goals, positive reinforcement, and plenty of encouragement. I adapt strategies to each learner, using patience, empathy, and creative methods to keep them engaged, build confidence, and support progress both academically and emotionally
How I teach English and Maths
I make Maths and English come alive by breaking tricky ideas into simple steps and showing how they really make sense. My lessons are interactive, creative, and full of encouragement, helping every student feel confident and capable. Whether it’s tackling equations, building writing skills, or boosting exam technique, I keep learning engaging and fun while making sure progress shines through
How I help students communicate
I help students communicate by creating a safe, encouraging space where they feel listened to and understood. Using patience, clear language, and positive reinforcement, I build their confidence to express ideas in ways that suit them best. Whether through discussion, writing, or creative activities, I support each learner in finding their voice and developing the skills to share it with others
How I help students engage with learning
I help students engage with learning by making lessons interactive, encouraging curiosity, and linking topics to their interests. With patience, creativity, and positive energy, I adapt activities to each learner so they feel motivated, confident, and excited to make progress.
How I make lessons fun
I specialize in making learning enjoyable and effective for all students, including those with diverse needs. My approach goes beyond the traditional classroom and I engage students with activities that align with their personal interests.
How I help students with focus, attention and emotional regulation
To help with focus and attention, I start by creating a predictable and organized learning space. This reduces distractions and helps students feel secure. Incorporating short, timed activities and movement breaks also helps to reset their attention. For example, a quick 60-second stretch or a brain break exercise can significantly improve concentration afterward.
I make an effort to connect with each student individually, showing genuine interest in their lives and validating their feelings. This helps them feel safe and understood, which is crucial for emotional and academic growth.
