About Me

Hello! I’m James, a qualified primary teacher (QTS) with over eight years of experience teaching Key Stage 2 in London and Brighton. I specialise in English, Maths, Science and SATs preparation, and I have extensive experience supporting children with SEND, including autism, ADHD and dyslexia.

My approach to tutoring is centred around making learning enjoyable, engaging and tailored to each child. I take time to understand each student’s strengths, areas for development and personal interests, using games, practical activities and real-life examples to keep lessons motivating and build confidence. I believe children make the best progress when they enjoy learning and feel supported to take risks and ask questions.

Every lesson is personalised to meet the individual needs of the learner. Whether your child needs help closing learning gaps, preparing for SATs, developing greater confidence or stretching themselves further, I adapt my teaching style and resources to suit their pace.

How I teach children with SEND

About me, my expertise, qualifications and SEND experience

I’m a qualified primary teacher (QTS) with over eight years of experience teaching Key Stage 2 in mainstream primary schools. I hold a BSc in Psychology and have extensive experience supporting children with a wide range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including autism (ASC), ADHD, dyslexia, speech and language needs, and social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. I currently teach in a school with a high proportion of SEND pupils and work closely with families, teaching assistants and SENCOs to provide personalised support that helps every child succeed.

How I teach students with SEND

Every child learns differently, so I adapt my teaching to meet their individual strengths and needs. I break learning into manageable steps, use clear instructions and visual supports where appropriate, and provide plenty of encouragement and positive reinforcement. I focus on building confidence first, creating a calm, supportive environment where children feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes and celebrate their achievements. My lessons are always flexible and tailored to the child’s pace.

How I teach Maths / English

I make Maths and English practical, engaging and relevant. In Maths, I use concrete resources, visual representations and real life examples to develop understanding before moving on to more abstract concepts. In English, I support reading, writing, spelling and grammar through enjoyable activities, discussion and creative tasks. Whether preparing for SATs, catching up or extending learning, I tailor lessons to each child’s goals while making learning enjoyable.

How I help students communicate

Building strong relationships is at the heart of my teaching. I encourage children to express their thoughts and ideas with confidence, giving them plenty of time to process information and respond. I adapt my communication to suit each learner, using clear language, visual prompts and questioning techniques that help pupils develop their confidence and independence.

How I help students engage with learning

I believe children learn best when they are interested in what they’re doing. I take time to get to know each student’s hobbies and interests and use these to personalise lessons wherever possible. Whether a child enjoys gaming, football, animals, music or science, I incorporate these interests into activities to make learning meaningful, motivating and memorable.

How I make lessons fun

Learning should be something children look forward to. I use games, quizzes, practical activities, challenges and technology to keep lessons engaging while ensuring clear learning objectives are achieved. I celebrate effort and progress, helping children build confidence and develop a positive attitude towards learning.

How I help students with focus, attention and emotional regulation

I understand that concentration and emotional regulation can be challenging for some children. I use structured routines, movement breaks, achievable goals and regular praise to help pupils stay engaged and motivated. I adapt the pace of lessons when needed and use positive behaviour strategies to reduce anxiety and help children feel calm, focused and ready to learn. My aim is to create a supportive environment where every child feels understood and can achieve success.
