Beth - Primary Teacher & Childrens Speech and Language Therapist

About Me

I assess and treat children of all ages and abilities who have difficulties with speech, language and communication and the skills that are needed for this to happen such as attention, listening and interaction. In addition, I work with children who have eating and drinking difficulties. I help enable children to develop their comprehension skills, clarity, voice, fluency and sound production. I’m also able to treat childhood speech disorders or adult speech impairments caused by stroke, brain injury or other conditions.

How I teach children with SEND

My consultant expertise teaching children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities

Whilst I now reside in the South West region of the UK, I am still fully capable of supporting families via video calls remotely across the world! I work with families and young people from ages 3 to 25 and educational staff in both mainstream schools and special educational establishments. I have extensive experience in the EHCP process and have worked with SEND practitioners in addition to SENCOs across various counties.

My consultant expertise teaching children and young people with additional needs

In addition to being a Speech and Language Therapist, I am also a parent of a child with a speech delay, and can therefore understand and fully empathise with the worry and apprehension that any difficulties can cause. My ethos and belief are that therapy should always be engaging and fun, with a focus on child-led activities resulting in the best possible outcomes.

I have further experience working with Autism, Cleft palate, hearing impairment, Dyslexia, Language Disorder, Apraxia, speech sound disorders, speech or language delay, Auditory Processing Disorder, and Down’s Syndrome amongst other syndromes and difficulties. I have additional training and experience in Attention Autism, AAC, PECS, Neurodiversity, Dysfluency/Stuttering, Sign Supported English and Shape Coding.

My consultant expertise teaching children and young people with neurodiversity

I have extensive experience working with young people and families who have a neurodiverse diagnosis (such as Autism), or those who are yet to be diagnosed. I believe that therapy and therapy goals for neurodiverse individuals should focus on their strengths should be set in collaboration with the parents or young people, and should take into account any sensory preferences or needs. I centre my goals around communication and self-advocacy.

My consultant expertise teaching children and young people with Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)
My strong belief is that every person has a right to communicate. If someone is non-speaking, non-verbal or has limited spoken language, there are a number of alternative or additional options to aid their communication and make sure they are better understood by other people in their lives. I love assessing and discussing options with young people and their parents/carers and then helping them by setting up the communication aids they need and can attain.

One of my favourite moments from my career was setting a child up with a communication aid, and him telling his mother, for the first time, that he loved her.

Life outside of Speech and Language Therapy!

One of my great loves in my free time is playing netball. In my youth, I represented my county and played to league standards. Whilst I no longer play at this level, I still enjoy this sport on a social level. I also enjoy pottery, paddle boarding, and indoor climbing and I’m an avid reader.

I am married to Kai and have 2 children, Elin and Nia. My parents reside in Wales. So I’m often taking trips across the bridge back home.
