Summary

This weekend, Isaac Harvey is taking on an extraordinary challenge in Berlin, and we’re delighted to share his story with the SEND Tutoring community.

Across two consecutive days, Isaac and Kevin Ly will take part in not one, but two Berlin marathons.

On Saturday 26th September, they will complete the Berlin Inline Skating Marathon, followed by the Berlin Marathon on Sunday 27th September. Kevin will push Isaac in a running wheelchair throughout both events.

Three years in the planning, the challenge has become known as the Berlin Double. Isaac and Kevin also hope to become the first known duo to complete both events together across the same weekend.

Raising Money for Wheels and Wheelchairs

Behind the physical challenge is an important cause.

Isaac and Kevin are aiming to raise £5,000 for Wheels and Wheelchairs, an inclusive sports club that brings wheelchair users and roller skaters together.

For more than 13 years, the group has been creating opportunities for wheelchair users and people with disabilities to get outdoors, experience the excitement of skating, take on new challenges and enjoy being part of a community.

Its activities have ranged from regular street skates in London to much bigger adventures. In 2024, members travelled from Brighton to Paris to mark the start of the Paralympic Games.

The money raised through the Berlin Double will help Wheels and Wheelchairs continue these activities, invest in equipment and enable more people to take part.

What Is Possible With the Right Support?

Isaac Harvey has spent much of his life challenging assumptions about disability and what people can achieve.

Born with limb differences (limb/pelvic hypo/aplasia), he has taken on thrilling experiences ranging from skiing and skydiving to speaking in front of 10,000 people at Wembley. His advocacy, public speaking and work to improve understanding of disability have also seen him recognised with an MBE.

There is something about Isaac’s approach that particularly resonates with us at SEND Tutoring. Having the right support does not mean lowering expectations of someone. It can mean adapting the environment, removing barriers and finding a different way for someone to participate.

The Berlin Double is a brilliant example of this. Isaac and Kevin are taking on the challenge together, combining their individual strengths to do something neither could do in quite the same way alone.

Kevin has supported Wheels and Wheelchairs for many years, giving his time to help wheelchair users participate, prepare equipment and feel part of the group. After taking up running during the Covid pandemic, he came up with the idea that he and Isaac could one day attempt the Berlin Double.

This weekend, that idea becomes reality.
