Finding the right SEND tutor for your child

Resources Blog Finding the right SEND tutor for your child

For a child with SEN, not just any tutor is going to pass muster to teach your child.

Recommendations in this instance are worth their salt, so ask your child’s class teacher for any tutors or agencies they think highly of.

Experience and qualifications count in this field – the age-old adage of all children being different is particularly relevant in the world of SEND. Each child who has learning difficulties is likely to be vastly different – with very different needs – to the next SEND child. The autistic spectrum sums this variation up well. Indeed, it is called a spectrum because everybody who is on it is different, and often will have more than one condition on that spectrum. So, it’s a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), along with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyspraxia. Another child may have ASD and pathological demand avoidance (PDA). As such, each SEND child will need a very tailored approach to meet their learning needs.

Tutors who are qualified teachers are the most likely to have experience working with lots of different types of children. Plus, they are used to differentiating work and homing in on individuals who need more help.

Teachers who have additional specialist training, have done a SEND Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or who have worked in specialist SEND schools are particularly primed to work with children with learning difficulties.

Also, first impressions count. How someone talks to you when you contact them to discuss their tutoring methods – such as the resources and activities they would ask your child to engage with – will give you some idea of how they will interact with your child.

Sally - SEND Tutor

I have an 8 year old son with an ASD, ADHD AND dyslexia. He’d been hugely struggling at school, so I decided to get a weekly specialist tutor to help him with his reading, writing and maths. SEND Tutoring has been totally amazing. My son seems to actually enjoy learning for the first time ever!
